“When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
— John 19:30
These final words from Jesus were a declaration of divine accomplishment. The penalty for sin had been paid in full. Christ had borne the wrath of God, standing in the place of sinners, securing salvation for those the Father had given Him.
This was not a vague offer of grace, but the completion of a definite and effectual work. Every sin of every soul Christ came to redeem was accounted for and answered in full. Justice was satisfied. The debt was canceled. Nothing remains for us to add.
In a world of striving and self-justification, these words silence every attempt to earn God’s favor. The cross declares: the work is done. Christ accomplished what we never could—perfect obedience, full atonement, and true reconciliation with God.
“It is finished” is the believer’s assurance. The foundation of our hope. The anchor for every weary soul that clings to the cross24 x 36
